Looking for a cozy, calming drink that’s easy to make and feels a little extra special? This lavender matcha is it. Whether you serve it hot on a slow morning or iced on a sunny afternoon, it’s a beautiful twist on the classic matcha latte—floral, earthy, and just the right amount of sweet.

We’ll walk through how to make a simple lavender syrup from scratch, the basics of making matcha (even if you’re new to it), and how to pull it all together into a homemade lavender matcha that tastes like something you’d order at a fancy café.

What Is Lavender Matcha?

Lavender matcha is a matcha latte that’s lightly sweetened with lavender-infused syrup. The matcha brings that rich, grassy depth while the lavender adds floral notes that mellow everything out.

You can make it hot or iced, depending on the time of year or your mood. The best part? Once you make the lavender syrup, the rest takes just minutes.

Ingredients You’ll Need

You only need a handful of simple ingredients to make this at home:

Lavender Syrup

Matcha Latte:

  • 1 teaspoon high-quality matcha powder
  • 2 ounces hot water (about 175°F—not boiling)
  • ¾ cup milk of choice (dairy, oat, almond, etc.)
  • 1–2 tablespoons lavender syrup, to taste
  • Ice (if making it iced)

Cold Foam:

  • 2 tablespoons whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon cream
  • 1-2 teaspoons lavender syrup (or any other flavor)

How to Make Lavender Matcha at Home

lavender, water and sugar

1. Make the Lavender Syrup

This part is simple and only takes about 10 minutes.

water, sugar, and lavender in a saucepan

In a small saucepan, combine the water, sugar, and dried lavender.

Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring until the sugar fully dissolves. Once simmering, reduce the heat and let it steep for 5 minutes.

Remove from heat, strain out the lavender, and let the syrup cool.

Store in a glass jar in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

Note: Be sure to use culinary-grade lavender. It should smell fresh and fragrant, not like soap.

2. Prepare the Matcha

If you’re new to matcha, here’s the easiest way to get smooth, lump-free results:

Sift 1 teaspoon of matcha powder into a small bowl or mug to prevent clumps.

Add 2 ounces of hot water (about 175°F). Whisk using a bamboo whisk (chasen) in a “W” motion until frothy. If you don’t have a whisk, a milk frother or a jar with a lid will work in a pinch.

3. Whip up the Lavender Cold Foam

Milk, lavender syrup, and cream

Combine 2 tbsp milk, and 1 tbsp cream with 1–2 tsp lavender simple syrup with a milk frother or shake in a jar.

Froth the mixture until it becomes thick and foamy, about 15–30 seconds.

Taste the foam. Add more lavender syrup for a sweeter, stronger floral flavor if desired. You can also add a splash of vanilla syrup or extract for extra depth.

4. Assemble Your Lavender Matcha

For an iced version:

Lastly, top with the lavender cold foam. Stir and savor!

For a hot version:

  1. Heat your milk until warm and frothy (not boiling).
  2. Add lavender syrup to a mug.
  3. Pour in the warm milk.
  4. Top with whisked matcha and stir gently.

Tips for the Best Lavender Matcha

  • Start small with syrup: Lavender can overpower easily, so begin with 1 tablespoon of syrup and add more if needed.
  • Use good matcha: Look for ceremonial-grade matcha for the best flavor and vibrant color.
  • Try oat milk: It pairs beautifully with the lavender and makes for a super creamy latte.
  • Batch the syrup: The lavender syrup keeps well in the fridge for up to two weeks—make extra for quick lattes later.
  • Chill your glass: For iced versions, pop your glass in the freezer for 5 minutes first for extra chill.

Lavender Matcha FAQ

Can I use fresh lavender?
Yes, but use slightly more—about 1½ tablespoons. Make sure it hasn’t been treated with chemicals and is intended for culinary use.

Is lavender matcha caffeinated?
Yes. Matcha contains about 70mg of caffeine per teaspoon—less than coffee but enough for a gentle energy boost.

What does lavender matcha taste like?
It’s earthy from the matcha, lightly sweet, and has a floral, calming aroma from the lavender. It’s smooth, balanced, and a little fancy-feeling.

Can I make it dairy-free?
Definitely! Oat, almond, or coconut milk all work well here.

Can I make it ahead?
You can prep the syrup and whisked matcha in advance, but assemble just before serving for best texture.
